Helpful tips for parents of young drivers

Accidents due to distracted driving are becoming too common these days. However, major accidents can be avoided by following some simple tips. We have listed here some helpful tips for parents of young drivers which can help your kid drive safely.

Act like a traffic controller and ask your teen to make a “flight plan” before he/she starts journey. Include key points in the “flight plan” like “taking off”, “Flight plan” etc. Here are some key points to consider while making a flight plan:

• ·         Start with asking questions like destination of their journey
• ·         Enquire about the route he/she is going to follow
• ·         At what time they will be traveling?
• ·         What will be total time of drive? When they plan to depart and arrive?
• ·         Which car they will be driving and if they will have co-passengers
• ·         Find out their contingency plan should something go wrong
• ·         Make sure your kid is rested well before they go for driving

As a parent you need to have clear answers for all these questions. If your teen is not able to answer any of these questions then it’s not a trip they should be taking. Also, make sure your teen contact you if any of the answers change during the course of their trip so that as a flight controller you can revise the plan.

If your teen’s flight plan has an answer “just driving around” perhaps the flight plan needs to be revised as driving around just for fun can be dangerous. Attending a party, a date or driving for a particular purpose have much more incentive to drive safely than just cruising around for fun. So next time your kid plans for a drive, make sure to act as a flight controller for your kid’s safe traveling.
