The Future of Today: The FCX Clarity

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

The world's first hydrogen-based fuel cell powered car, the Honda FCX Clarity, is a four-door four-passenger sedan with zero emission. It is powered by a highly powerful and efficient Honda V flow fuel cell stack. Built on the entirely-new Honda V Flow fuel cell platform, this hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle is propelled by an electric motor that runs on electricity.

The electric motor produces 127 horsepower and can generate more electricity than needed to power all the gadgetry found in the vehicle. Fuel efficiency of the 2009 Honda FCX Clarity is three times that of a modern gasoline-powered vehicle. The FCX Clarity is projected to have a fuel efficiency of 79/68 mpg (City/Highway). Cruising capacity of the 2009 Honda FCX Clarity is about 280 miles and its emissions are only water vapors.

The FCX Clarity takes design and layout themes from the FCX concept which was first seen a few years ago. It features a narrow body to house its unique powertrain. Inside, it offers a limousine-like cabin volume with its vertical flow fuel cell stack that fits within the center console. A climate control system within the seats minimizes energy use by regulating the temperature at the surface of the occupants.

Honda has plans to produce about 200 Clarity cars during the next three years. Hydrogen fuel stations are necessary to refuel a fuel cell vehicle and, as it stands now, these stations are still quite limited in number. Therefore, only customers currently residing in the Torrance, Santa Monica and Irvine areas who meet additional qualification criteria were eligible to take an FCX Clarity home. Stay tuned for updated Leasing Offers, and more news on the release of additional vehicles across the country.

The 2010 Honda Insight: The Hybrid built for Everyone!

Monday, March 2, 2009

The goal with the Insight was to create an affordable, practical hybrid that everyone could drive. Now, that goal is pretty much set, and the wait is finally over!

To help Insight owners realize the full benefits of Honda hybrid technology, the Insight will feature a new interactive, driver-focused fuel economy enhancement technology named the Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist™). Eco Assist combines multiple functions:
  • A driver-activated ECON mode that optimizes control of the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), engine and related powertrain components to further improve vehicle fuel efficiency.
  • A driver feedback function that uses an innovative speedometer display with changing background colors to provide real-time guidance to the driver on achieving higher fuel efficiency
  • A unique fuel-economy scoring function using a plant-leaf graphic to provide feedback to the driver on current-trip driving efficiency and lifetime fuel-efficient driving performance.

All Insights are powered by an advanced 1.3-liter SOHC aluminum-alloy i-VTEC engine and CVT, along with a new generation of Honda's IMA hybrid system for exceptional fuel economy and fun-to-drive performance. Evoking the advanced and aerodynamic five-door sedan design similar to the revolutionary FCX Clarity fuel cell car, the new Insight has a low center of gravity, a spacious five-passenger cabin, and offers an enhanced driving experience with roomy and versatile interior spacing.

Standard features on all new Insights include 60/40 split and fold-down rear seatbacks; two-tier digital instrument panels; automatic climate control; power windows, mirrors and door locks; a tilting and telescoping steering wheel and a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3 audio playback, an auxiliary audio input jack and Speed-Sensitive Volume Control (SVC). Insight EX models add alloy wheels, cruise control, 6-speaker audio system with USB audio interface, steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters, Honda Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and an available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Voice Recognition. The Insight offers different trim levels so that you can choose what's most important to you.
